South Jersey has long been a hotbed for soccer talent, producing players who have gone on to shine on collegiate, professional, and international stages. As we count down to the USA TODAY Network's celebration of the region's top 250 all-time athletes, we're starting where the passion begins: on the pitch. We need your help to crown the best men's soccer player in South Jersey history.

From high school standouts to global stars, these 10 athletes (listed alphabetically) represent the very best of the region. Each one left an indelible mark at the local level before achieving greatness beyond. Let's take a closer look at the legends who defined South Jersey soccer.

Brenden Aaronson – The "Medford Messi" spent a year at Shawnee High before joining the Philadelphia Union's YSC Academy. He burst onto the scene with seven goals in 51 games for the Union, scoring on his professional debut. Aaronson then took his talents overseas to Red Bull Salzburg and now plays for Leeds United, while also netting nine goals for the U.S. men's national team.

Mike Carbonara – A 1984 Vineland High grad, Carbonara set a New Jersey record with 67 goals in his senior season. After a stellar career at Rutgers, he dominated indoor soccer for 15 seasons, scoring 97 goals in 506 games across the Major Indoor Soccer League and National Professional Soccer League. He also represented the U.S. futsal national team.

Chris Carmichael – As a senior in 1998, Carmichael scored a Rancocas Valley-record 35 goals and earned South Jersey Player of the Year honors. He became Marshall University's all-time leading scorer with 58 goals and 128 points, winning MAC Player of the Year twice. His professional career included eight seasons with the Ocean City Barons/Nor'easters, where he set team records with 62 goals and 148 points in 102 games.

A three-time All-State selection from Washington Township, Dovell was a force at both forward and midfield. He went on to star at the University of Virginia, helping the Cavaliers to multiple NCAA tournaments before a brief professional stint.

Mike Gaven – The Cinnaminson High product was a two-time All-American at the University of Virginia before being drafted by the Columbus Crew in 2003. Gaven played over 300 MLS games, winning two MLS Cups and earning 10 caps with the U.S. national team.

Chris Konopka – A goalkeeper from Shawnee High, Konopka played college soccer at Providence and later won an MLS Cup with Sporting Kansas City in 2013. He also represented the Republic of Ireland at the youth level and played professionally in Ireland and Scotland.

Danny Mwanga – Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo but raised in South Jersey, Mwanga starred at Camden Catholic High. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by the Philadelphia Union and scored 12 goals in his first two seasons. Mwanga also played for the U.S. U-20 national team.

Chris Pontius – A standout at Cherokee High, Pontius was the MAC Player of the Year at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was drafted seventh overall by D.C. United in 2009 and went on to score 44 MLS goals, earning an MLS Best XI selection in 2012.

Mike Sorber – A graduate of St. Louis University High (though originally from New Jersey, Sorber's roots trace back to South Jersey), he was a key midfielder for the U.S. national team in the 1990s, earning 67 caps and playing in two World Cups. He later coached in MLS.

Bobby Smith – The Shawnee High alum was a two-time All-American at the University of Virginia and a key defender for the U.S. national team in the 1990s, earning 33 caps. Smith played professionally in MLS and Europe, including a stint with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars.

These 10 players represent just a glimpse of South Jersey's rich soccer heritage. But the question remains: who is the all-time best?
