It's that time of the week again—time to celebrate the standout performances from high school girls athletes across the region. Last week, Fairhaven's Briarose Aspden dominated the polls with over 10,000 votes (65% of the total), earning the Girls Athlete of the Week honor. She joins a growing list of past winners, including Old Rochester's Caroline Houdelette, GNB Voc-Tech's Zoey Chase, and Bishop Stang's A'mya Acevedo, all of whom have set the bar high this season.
This week's nominees for May 4-10 are a mix of lacrosse stars lighting up the scoreboard and tennis players holding their ground on the court. Voting is open until 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, so make your voice heard and support your favorite athlete.
On the track and field, Cabe soared to first in the high jump (4-6) and the 100 hurdles (20.7) against Cape Cod Tech, while Cookson swept the triple jump (28-8), long jump (14-01.50), 100 (14.0), and 200 (28.2) in the same meet. These performances are setting the pace for the spring season, especially with the latest MIAA power rankings shaking up the SouthCoast standings.
In lacrosse, the goals are piling up fast. Levrault exploded for a combined 14 goals in two games, including an 8-goal outburst against Fairhaven. Araujo fought hard in a loss to Fairhaven, tallying 3 goals and 5 draw controls. Gagni and Smith both contributed consistently over three games, with Gagni posting 5 goals and 4 assists, and Smith adding 4 goals and 12 draw controls.
White made her mark with 4 goals and 1 assist in a win over Bridgewater-Raynham, plus a goal against New Bedford. Aspden continued her hot streak with 12 goals and 1 assist across three games, while Souza matched her with 12 goals and 3 assists. Medeiros hit a milestone, scoring 7 goals against Bourne to reach the 100th of her career, and added 3 more against Dartmouth. Caulkins also joined the century club with 7 goals against Cape Cod Tech, following up with 5 against Bristol-Aggie.
Cook showcased her all-around game with 7 goals, 4 assists, and 11 draw controls in two games, while Kilpatrick controlled the midfield with 3 goals, 5 assists, and 11 draw controls in wins over Dartmouth and Somerset Berkley. On the tennis court, Pavao won her first singles match against New Bedford, proving that racket sports are just as thrilling this week.
From high-scoring lacrosse battles to precision on the track and tennis court, these athletes are bringing their A-game. Don't miss your chance to vote—every vote counts, and the winner will be announced after polls close on May 17.
