Kayl Petersen's basketball journey is taking a fascinating full-circle turn. The former Marquette signee, who followed head coach Megan Duffy to Virginia Tech two years ago, is now transferring back to the Golden Eagles, committing to the program she originally chose back in October 2022.
Petersen, a 6'0" forward from Waupun, Wisconsin, spent two seasons as a role player for the Hokies. As a freshman, she contributed 4.2 points and 2.9 rebounds in 15.8 minutes per game. However, her role diminished this past season, with her minutes dropping to 10.6 per game and her production following suit. She saw double-digit minutes just once in Virginia Tech's final eight regular-season games, though she did log 15 minutes in their NCAA Tournament loss to Oregon.
While playing time may have been a factor, Petersen's return to her home state of Wisconsin likely played a significant role in her decision. For Marquette fans, this move adds a familiar name and a player with high-major experience to the roster.
For the Golden Eagles to benefit from this addition, Petersen will need to elevate her game. Her career three-point shooting sits at 22.6%, and she has struggled with turnovers. However, she has shown flashes of potential, shooting over 50% on two-point attempts and ranking in the top 500 nationally in rebounding rate on both ends of the floor last season, according to Her Hoop Stats.
Her commitment brings a needed veteran presence and size to the frontcourt. As she rejoins the program that first recruited her, Petersen will have a prime opportunity for a fresh start and increased responsibility when she becomes eligible for the 2026-27 season. This homecoming could be the catalyst she needs to unlock her full potential in the Big East.
