Viola Keeps Winning: Panthers Owner Gets Second Kentucky Derby Victory

The winning streak continues for Florida Panthers owner Vinnie Viola, but this time it wasn't on the ice. At the 152nd Kentucky Derby, Viola's horse, Golden Tempo, charged to victory as a 23-1 long shot in the 1 1/8-mile race at Churchill Downs. It's the second Derby win for Viola's St. Elias Stables, following Always Dreaming's triumph in 2017—a fitting addition to a banner few years for the Panthers organization, which claimed back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025.

Saturday's race was historic beyond Viola's success. Trainer Cherie DeVaux became the first female trainer ever to win the Kentucky Derby, and only the second woman to capture a Triple Crown race. Jockey Jose Ortiz also made his mark, securing his first Derby victory in his 11th attempt. Ortiz guided Golden Tempo on a thrilling late charge from the back of the field, overtaking favorite Renegade (6-1) in the final strides. Starting from the 19th post position after a third-place finish in the Arkansas Derby, Golden Tempo's run was a testament to patience and precision.

DeVaux told NBC Sports after the race that a decision on whether to pursue the Triple Crown at the Preakness Stakes later this month remains undecided. For Viola and the Panthers faithful, it's another reason to celebrate—a champion's mindset that translates from the rink to the racetrack.
