An era in women's football is coming to a close as Aston Villa midfielder Lucy Staniforth announces her retirement at the end of the season—and she couldn't be more at peace with the decision.

The 33-year-old former England international, who earned 17 caps for the Lionesses between 2018 and 2025, says there was no hesitation when the moment came to hang up her boots. "To me, it's really exciting. It's not something I've wrestled with," Staniforth told BBC Sport. "I'm really comfortable with the decision. It's been really cool to take the football lens off and be excited for me, as a person, moving into the big, wide world. I just feel really at ease with it. I'm super-content with my career and everything that I've overcome and achieved."

Staniforth's journey is one of resilience and determination. Starting her career at Sunderland in 2008 at just 16 years old, she went on to represent seven different clubs—more than any other player in Women's Super League history. Along the way, she was a twice-losing FA Cup finalist (with Sunderland in 2009 and Bristol Academy in 2013), and was part of the Aston Villa squad that achieved their best WSL finish of fifth place in 2022-23.

Born in York, Staniforth was part of a generation of talented players who emerged from the northeast's academy system, counting England defender Lucy Bronze as a close friend and former carpool companion. Known for her intelligent movement and precise passing, she leaves Villa having made over 50 appearances in all competitions.

But the path wasn't always smooth. Back-to-back ACL injuries in 2014—one in each knee—sidelined her for nearly three seasons. Yet she fought back each time, a testament to her character. "I feel so lucky to have been able to go to the places I've been to and to have met the people I have," she added. "Football has ultimately been my life. It's made me who I am and it's all I've known."

As she prepares for life beyond the pitch, Staniforth leaves with her head held high—a player who gave everything to the game and now steps away on her own terms.
