Victor Wembanyama was in the middle of a decent start for the San Antonio Spurs in fame 2 of their playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers -- five points, four boards and a block in 12 minutes.

But then? Early in the second quarter, he hit the floor hard and appeared to bang his head. He was motionless for a moment with his eyes closed before he got up and headed straight to the locker room.

What's the latest there? Did he suffer a head injury of some kind in the process?

The answer is: He's now in the NBA's concussion protocol and will miss the remainder of the game on Tuesday night. Awful news for the superstar and for the Spurs.

Victor Wembanyama (concussion protocol) is out for the remainder of tonight’s Spurs-Trail Blazers game, Spurs announce.

If a player is diagnosed with a concussion, he cannot return toparticipation: (i) for at least 48 hours, including the date of diagnosis; and (ii) until after he completesthe required return-to-participation process.

That process can't begin until 24 hours "after the time of injury" and it starts with escalating levels of work, "from a stationary bike, to jogging, to agility work, to non-contact team drills."

To return, the player needs to be free of symptoms, evaluated by a physician, has completed the process and "A team physician has discussed the return-to-participation process and decision with the Director of the NBA Concussion Program."
