A recap of the first championship game of the 2026 MW Softball Tournament.

The Mountain West Softball Championship delivered exactly what fans had been waiting for all season. After months of hard-fought battles, the tournament final came down to the two best teams in the conference—Grand Canyon and Nevada—two programs that will remain Mountain West rivals through 2027. But the stakes couldn't have been higher: Grand Canyon needed to win twice after clawing through the losers' bracket, while Nevada only needed one victory to secure their first conference tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth since 2009.

Everything seemed to be lining up for Nevada after three dominant days of play. But in a stunning twist, the bats that had carried them so far suddenly went silent. GCU ace Oakley Vickers delivered a masterclass performance, shutting out the Wolf Pack for seven innings in a 3-0 victory. The win forced a decisive Game 9, marking the second straight year the winner's bracket champion couldn't close the deal.

The offensive fireworks everyone expected never quite materialized—at least not early on. Both teams came into the game having already shattered the previous Mountain West Tournament record for runs scored (25, set by SDSU in 2006), despite playing one fewer game than the record-holders. But in the first inning, only Hannah Di Genova's four-pitch walk kept the scoreboard operator from a nap.

The Lopes broke through in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back singles off Nevada starter Tess Bumiller put runners on, and a wild pitch moved both into scoring position. Addison Shifflett delivered a sacrifice fly for her tournament-record 10th RBI, putting GCU on the board first. Tinley Lucas followed with a double, extending the lead to 2-0 before the inning ended. Nevada turned to Ainsley Berlingeri in the circle, but the damage was done.

The Wolf Pack finally showed signs of life in the third when Katie Wetteland led off with a double. The next pitch hit Di Genova, putting two runners on with no outs. But Vickers and the GCU defense locked in, stranding both runners and preserving the shutout. It was that kind of day for Nevada—close, but never quite close enough.

For fans watching at home or in the stands, this was a reminder that softball championships are won with pitching and defense as much as power hitting. And with Game 9 on deck, the Lopes had all the momentum.
