On the biggest stage of the season, Vero Beach baseball came within four outs of pulling off a monumental upset. The Fighting Indians took a one-run lead into the sixth inning of the FHSAA state semifinal in Fort Myers, but nationally ranked Venice High showed why they're considered one of the top teams in the country.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Venice mounted a decisive rally, scoring three runs to seize a 4-2 lead. Venice's ace, Carter Cox, then slammed the door in the seventh, striking out the final three batters to cap a perfect 13-0 senior season and send his team to the state championship game.
For Vero Beach head coach Bryan Rahal, the near-miss stung but didn't diminish his team's effort. "We were excited about the opportunity to play the No. 1 team in the country," said Rahal, now in his 14th season leading the program. "We really expected to come in here and beat them. We were ready and excited to play the game."
"To have a lead in the sixth inning, it's tough. You're feeling it with the lead right there. The kids deserved to win the game."
While the loss brings a heartbreaking end to a memorable season, Vero Beach's gritty performance against a powerhouse opponent is a testament to the program's growth and resilience. For a team that dared to believe it could topple a national powerhouse, this game will be one to build on for seasons to come.
