ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia Commonwealth University basketball players Wednesday teamed up with local students for a morning of fun, field games and fellowship for the Roanoke Minnick Games on the school’s campus. Over the past five years, these games have been a tremendous success—not just a competition—but a way for our students to enjoy the thrill and satisfaction of physical activity. The kids are inspired by 6’7 role models and realize with hard work, they also can succeed in the classroom and in life. VCU players signed basketballs, gave the student athletes a few pointers, as well as cheered every layup and jump shot attempted by the aspiring young superstars. EnCircle’s Minnick Schools are special education day schools which serve students ages 5 to 22, creating a supportive environment that helps students navigate difficult situations and get on track academically. For many students, the path to school success gets lost due to challenging behaviors stemming from developmental delays, emotional disabilities, and other impairments that result in school suspensions. Minnick Schools offer exceptional programs and serve children with autism spectrum disorders, intellectual challenges, and multiple disabilities.
