Ricardo Vasconcelos produced a masterclass in batting, crafting a superb 115 to steer Northamptonshire into a commanding 60-run lead over Worcestershire on day two of the County Championship Division Two clash at Wantage Road.
The stylish left-hander, who also scored 127 against Kent last month, showcased a brilliant blend of watchful defence and crisp strokeplay. His innings was punctuated by 18 boundaries, setting the stage for a dominant display from the home side.
Vasconcelos found a willing partner in Saif Zaib, and together they ignited the contest with a proactive fourth-wicket stand of 101 off just 20 overs. Zaib, last season's leading run-scorer in county cricket, had seen limited opportunities this year but seized his moment with a near run-a-ball 75, injecting urgency into the innings.
After the partnership was broken, James Sales (44 not out) and George Bartlett (35 not out) took the reins, combining for an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 79 against the second new ball. Their composure pushed Northamptonshire past Worcestershire's first-innings total of 306, with the hosts closing on 366-5 before bad light brought an early end to the day's play.
For Worcestershire, Tom Taylor (2-60) and Oliver Hannon-Dalby posed persistent threats, finding late swing with the new ball, while Beyers Swanepoel also chipped in with two wickets. But the Pears were left to rue missed opportunities as Northamptonshire's batters took control.
The day began with Northamptonshire resuming on 40-0, but they soon lost skipper Luke Procter when Taylor induced a sharp lift that caught the splice of the bat, flying to second slip. Calvin Harrison added a quick 43 off 55 balls with Vasconcelos before inside-edging Swanepoel onto his stumps.
Vasconcelos, however, was in imperious form. He raced to his fifty with three consecutive boundaries, crunching Swanepoel through the covers and pulling him behind square. He then took a liking to Adam Finch's bowling, going down on one knee to stroke him through cover and playing an audacious uppercut over the slips.
With momentum firmly in their favour, Northamptonshire will look to build on their lead when play resumes, while Worcestershire will need early wickets to claw their way back into the contest.
