Vanderbilt basketball's Tyler Nickel entered the transfer portal on April 19, USA TODAY Sports has learned.

However, Nickel is a unique case because he does not have any eligibility currently, having played four years already. This was noted in his portal entry.

Nickel played one year at North Carolina, one year at Virginia Tech and two years with the Commodores. In 2025-26, he averaged 13.5 points per game and shot 40% from 3-point range.

Nickel is one of multiple players without eligibility who have entered the transfer portal in this and previous offseasons on the chance that the NCAA changes its rules to grant them eligibility.

However, some players in his situation have entered the transfer portal in hopes that the NCAA passes a rule it has been considering in which all athletes get five years of eligibility with no redshirts and limited waivers.

Without the rule, there is no argument Nickel can make to get eligibility. He did not suffer any injuries in college or have any situations that could lead to him having an argument for a waiver.

If the rule does pass, it is not clear how it would be implemented. Specifically, it is unknown whether the rule would retroactively apply to players like Nickel or only to players going forward.

Vanderbilt has had to move on in the roster-building process without Nickel. As a team with the goal to advance in the NCAA tournament, it cannot afford to hold a starting spot for a player whose eligibility is uncertain. The Commodores have already taken three starting-caliber transfers from the portal, and new roster limits mean teams cannot have more than 15 total players.

If the NCAA rule does pass, it's possible there could be an avenue to return to Vanderbilt if players like Nickel were excluded from roster limits to avoid teams making mass cuts to try to bring back fifth-years. But this is unknown right now. If Nickel were to be eligible but count against the roster limit, he'd have to find a team with an open spot.

Nickel must go in the portal now to keep all his options open due to a new NCAA rule that levies heavy punishments against teams that take transfers who did not go in the portal. With Nickel in the portal now, he does not need to commit anywhere until and unless he is granted eligibility.

A group of fourth-year Vanderbilt athletes, led by football player Langston Patterson, already sued the NCAA this fall looking to receive an injunction granting them a fifth year. These athletes argued that the NCAA's redshirt rule prevented them from making a fifth year of NIL money that was available to other athletes.

However, these players were not granted an injunction, which likely closes the door to Nickel being able to successfully sue for the same thing.
