In a significant recruiting development, 2026 Mr. Basketball winner Zavier Zens has announced his commitment to the University of Illinois. The Wisconsin Lutheran senior, who recently reopened his recruitment, chose the Illini over strong interest from the University of Wisconsin and a familiar offer from Utah State.
Zens made his decision public on April 17, citing a desire for elite development as the key factor. "What I was looking for was the best chance to develop, become the best player I can become," Zens said. He highlighted the opportunity to practice daily against one of the nation's top rosters as a major draw, noting Illinois's proven track record of player development and strong team culture.
The 6-foot-7 standout is coming off a legendary high school career, having just led Wisconsin Lutheran to a third consecutive WIAA state title and a second perfect 30-0 season in three years. His recruitment became a late-cycle priority for many programs after he requested a release from his National Letter of Intent with Northern Iowa, following head coach Ben Jacobson's departure to Utah State.
Despite taking an official visit to Utah State, among others, Zens ultimately felt the competitive environment at Illinois was unmatched. "I wanted to test myself," he explained, adding that the Illini's belief in his ability to make an impact on a top-tier team was ultimately decisive.
Zens revealed that conversations with his cousin, former Wisconsin Lutheran star and current Charlotte Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel, helped solidify his thinking. The advice "iron sharpens iron" resonated deeply, reinforcing his choice to join a program where daily competition would push him to his limits and prepare him for the next level.
