The Washington Huskies are making big moves in Texas, becoming the first program to offer elite 2028 safety James Foster III from Lancaster High School. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound four-star prospect is already one of the most sought-after players in the nation, ranked as the No. 2 safety and No. 20 overall recruit in the 2028 class by 247Sports, with 42 offers before his junior season even begins.
Foster III's highlight reel explains the frenzy. Whether he's patrolling deep as a true safety or stepping into the box to deliver bone-crushing hits, his style would remind Huskies safeties coach Taylor Mays of his own playing days. Even on special teams, Foster III shines as a gunner, showing the relentless approach that sets him apart from other top prospects.
Washington wasn't alone in making an impression on Monday—Arkansas, LSU, and Oregon also joined the race. But the Huskies have ground to make up on early favorites SMU, Texas, and Notre Dame, all of which hosted the in-state standout for unofficial visits last fall.
Looking ahead, Foster III's potential arrival in Seattle would fill a big need. Senior Alex McLaughlin will be long gone by the time Foster III enrolls, and while sophomores Rylon Dillard-Allen and true freshman Gavin Day will have more experience, adding another high-end safety would keep the pipeline strong. The Huskies are also well-positioned for 2027 four-star safety Gavin Williams from Damien High School in California, setting up a potential streak of elite defensive backs since Jedd Fisch took over in January 2024.
For now, Washington is making its pitch early—and in the competitive world of recruiting, that first offer can go a long way.
