USWNT head coach Emma Hayes has set the bar high for captain Lindsey Horan as the midfielder prepares for a highly anticipated return to the NWSL this summer. Horan will join the expansion Denver Summit, bringing her world-class pedigree back to her home state of Colorado.
Speaking ahead of the USWNT's friendly against Japan, Hayes emphasized the significance of Horan's homecoming, calling it "a win for the NWSL." She expects the 31-year-old veteran to be an immediate catalyst for the Summit, who are navigating a challenging debut season.
"Lindsey's no passenger ever; she's so ultra competitive, she will want to drive that team as a leader," Hayes stated. Highlighting Horan's professionalism and winning mentality, honed during a trophy-laden stint with European powerhouse Olympique Lyonnais, Hayes believes her captain will elevate the entire league. "I think she will lift the league and the sport up in this country by returning home," she added.
Before her Colorado homecoming, Horan has unfinished business in France. She is seeing out her contract with Lyon, who remain in contention for a historic treble—the Division 1 Féminine, the UEFA Women's Champions League, and the Coupe de France. Adding to that silverware would only amplify the winning pedigree she brings back to the American league she once starred in with the Portland Thorns.
For the Denver Summit and NWSL fans, Horan's return represents more than just a major signing. It's the arrival of a proven champion and a USWNT leader poised to raise the standard and inspire the next generation on home soil.
