USC football's 2025 season fell short of expectations, and the defense was the primary culprit. A combination of injuries, illnesses, and youth derailed the unit's progress, with key players like Kamari Ramsey missing critical matchups, such as the Illinois game. The defensive line's development lagged behind coordinator D'Anton Lynn's timeline, and Lynn's subsequent departure to Penn State left a gaping hole in the coaching staff.

Enter Gary Patterson, a Hall of Fame defensive mind returning to the college sidelines as USC's new defensive coordinator—his first active role in that capacity since 2000, when he began his legendary tenure at TCU. ESPN highlighted the move as a "fascinating hire" for head coach Lincoln Riley ahead of a pivotal 2026 season. Patterson isn't coming alone: he's bringing safeties coach Paul Gonzales, a familiar face from his TCU days, and special teams coordinator Mike Ekeler, who brings experience from Nebraska, Tennessee, and Kansas. The defensive staff shake-up also includes the departure of co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Eric Henderson, who returned to the NFL.

Perhaps the most underrated upgrade, however, is the change at linebacker coach. With Rob Ryan no longer in that role, the Trojans have addressed a major weakness. Patterson's tactical brilliance is undeniable, but the big question is whether he can quickly adapt to modern college football after a few years away from active coaching. If he's fully up to speed—and if the players rise to the occasion—USC's defense could finally become the backbone of the team. For a program looking to turn the corner, these coaching changes are the first step toward making 2026 a statement season.
