The USC men's basketball program has a clear mission for the 2027 season: win big in March Madness. Under head coach Eric Musselman, the Trojans have yet to secure an NCAA Tournament berth, but that's expected to change next year. With an expanded tournament field growing from 68 to 76 teams and a significantly upgraded roster, simply making the cut won't cut it. The goal is to advance deep into the bracket.

ESPN's latest college basketball rankings, released after weeks of transfer portal activity, project USC as a potential Sweet 16 team. The analysis highlights the Trojans' impressive talent pool: "In terms of pure on-paper talent, there won't be too many teams with more than USC next season," the report notes. With Alijah Arenas expected to return, Musselman will have five McDonald's All-Americans from the past two recruiting classes. The roster features an elite incoming class of three high-level recruits, plus Big East transfers KJ Lewis and Eric Reibe. Key returners Rodney Rice, Jacob Cofie, and Arenas add continuity. While questions remain about perimeter shooting and shot distribution, the group is undeniably intriguing.

Depth is a major strength. Players like Rodney Rice, KJ Lewis, Christian Collins, Jacob Cofie, Eric Reibe, and Alijah Arenas give USC multiple scoring options, a deep bench, and a versatile frontcourt. If the team stays healthy, it should boast balance on both ends of the floor. Just squeaking into a 76-team field and bowing out early would be a clear disappointment.

The bar must be set higher. USC should at least reach the Round of 32, but anything less than a second-weekend appearance will leave the season feeling incomplete. For a program aiming to make its mark, the message is simple: making the tournament is just the starting point.
