In a bold move that could reshape the landscape of American curling, USA Curling has hired one of the sport's all-time greats to lead its high-performance program. Brad Gushue, the decorated Canadian skip who captained his nation to Olympic gold in 2006, will step into the role of high-performance director, the organization announced Wednesday.
Gushue, who recently retired from a legendary playing career, brings a wealth of championship experience to the U.S. program. His resume includes Olympic bronze in 2022, a world title in 2017, and seven Canadian national championships—credentials that instantly elevate expectations for an American team hungry for podium finishes.
"This role felt like a natural fit, and positions like this don't come along all that often in the sport of curling," Gushue said. "It is an opportunity to stay close to the sport and make a meaningful impact in a new way."
The timing couldn't be more critical. The U.S. curling program is riding momentum from a silver medal in mixed doubles at the recent Milan Cortina Games, and the men's team has already proven its medal potential with gold in 2018 and bronze in 2006. But the women's team, despite a strong fourth-place finish this year, has yet to reach the Olympic podium—a void Gushue will be tasked with filling.
USA Curling's vision extends beyond the next quadrennial, with an eye on the 2034 home Games in Salt Lake City. Gushue's mandate includes working closely with athletes in both the men's and women's programs, identifying emerging talent, advancing coach education, and building what the organization calls a "high-performance culture that delivers podium results at world championships and Olympic Games."
USA Curling CEO Dean Gemmell praised Gushue's "extensive experience as a manager of business operations and as a leader of teams both on and off the ice."
"We are thrilled to welcome him," Gemmell added, "as we work to achieve the kind of international success that builds the sport at every level."
For American curling fans, this hiring signals a new era—one where the pursuit of Olympic gold is backed by a champion who knows exactly what it takes to reach the top of the podium.
