The U.S. ski team is bringing back Phil McNichol as head coach to try to revitalize the men's Alpine program. The men's Alpine team won two medals — both silvers by Ryan Cochran-Siegle in the super-G — at the last two versions of the Winter Olympics, the Beijing and Milan Cortina Games.

The U.S. Ski Team is making a bold move to reignite its men's Alpine program by bringing back a familiar face: Phil McNichol has been named head coach, tasked with reversing a medal drought that has seen the team claim just two silvers—both courtesy of Ryan Cochran-Siegle in the super-G—across the last two Winter Olympics in Beijing and Milan Cortina.

McNichol, who previously led the U.S. squad from 2002 to 2008 during a golden era featuring legends like Ted Ligety, Bode Miller, Daron Rahlves, Steven Nyman, and Marco Sullivan, returns with a proven track record of building championship cultures. Most recently, he served as Alpine director for Canada from 2019 to 2022, honing his skills in athlete development on the international stage.

"He's a true team builder who creates an environment where athletes and staff can grow both individually and together as a high-performing group," said U.S. Alpine director Sasha Rearick in a statement. "Phil brings a genuine care for people, great energy, and a lot of fun to the daily process of getting better."

In his new role, McNichol will focus on preparing athletes for the demanding World Cup circuit and major global competitions. His athlete-centered leadership style is expected to foster both personal growth and team cohesion, a critical need for a program striving to return to podium prominence.

"U.S. Ski & Snowboard has built tremendous momentum, and I'm excited to help contribute to the next chapter by creating an environment where athletes and staff can thrive and perform at their best," McNichol said.

For fans of winter sports, this hire signals a renewed commitment to excellence—and a potential turning point for a team hungry to add more hardware to its storied legacy.
