The energy was electric at the University of North Dakota's Memorial Union on Thursday night. Students packed the iconic Social Stairs, a sea of green and black, riding every wave of emotion as they watched their Fighting Hawks battle Wisconsin in the NCAA Frozen Four semifinal.
Despite facing a 2-0 deficit heading into the third period, hope never wavered on campus. "We've been putting up a good fight," said air traffic management student Alex Nelson, echoing the sentiment of the crowd. "I'm hoping they can pull it all together here."
That hope ignited into a roaring cheer when UND finally broke through with a late third-period goal, cutting the lead to 2-1. For a moment, the Social Stairs erupted with the familiar chants and songs that define the legendary UND hockey atmosphere. Aviation safety student Arsham Dionysian, leading many of those chants, felt the immense pressure of the national stage but remained a catalyst for spirit until the final buzzer.
The passion wasn't confined to Grand Forks. A strong contingent of UND students, including the hockey band and cheer team, brought the fight to T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Commercial aviation student Jayden Erickson, part of the traveling band, spoke of their mission to export UND's unmatched energy directly to the arena, a task made even more special by encountering a UND alum piloting their flight.
Back on campus, the event was a powerful community builder. University staff, including David Dodds from communications and Meloney Linder from marketing, captured the buzz that gripped not just the student body but the entire community throughout the playoff run. For a program with a rich history, including a national title in 2016, this Frozen Four appearance showcased the unifying power of college hockey at its best.
