The path from college hockey to the NHL is a dream for many, and for University of North Dakota defenseman Abram Wiebe, that dream is about to become a reality. The 6-foot-3 junior from Mission, B.C., is set to sign with the Calgary Flames and could join the NHL roster immediately for the team's final four games of the season.
Calgary acquired Wiebe's rights from the Vegas Golden Knights in a January trade, a savvy move for a player originally drafted in the seventh round in 2022. Choosing to return to UND for his junior year instead of signing with Vegas last summer proved to be a pivotal decision. Wiebe was instrumental in leading the Fighting Hawks to the NCHC's Penrose Cup as regular-season champions and a Frozen Four appearance, capping his collegiate career with a strong season of five goals and 29 points.
His transition to professional hockey comes on the heels of UND's season ending in the Frozen Four semifinals. As Wiebe prepares to report to Calgary, he leaves behind a legacy at UND and steps into an exciting opportunity to make his NHL debut during a critical late-season stretch for the Flames.
