UNC basketball got a commitment from a 2026 recruit in Kevin Thomas. Here's a breakdown of Thomas' game and possible role in Chapel Hill.

The Tar Heels are adding some serious firepower to their future roster. UNC basketball and head coach Michael Malone have secured a commitment from Kevin Thomas, a dynamic 6-foot-7 wing who becomes the fourth member of the program's 2026 recruiting class.

Thomas, who initially signed with LSU before requesting a release following the firing of coach Matt McMahon, chose the Tar Heels on Wednesday, May 13. He picked UNC over a host of other suitors, including Auburn, Florida State, and Florida.

Rated as a four-star recruit and a top-100 prospect nationally, Thomas brings a winning pedigree to Chapel Hill. He won three state championships at Weston Sagemont Prep in Florida, where he was a teammate of current UNC guard Matt Able. Thomas now joins a promising 2026 class that already includes forward Maximo Adams, center Sayon Keita, and guard Malloy Smith.

So, what exactly are the Tar Heels getting? Thomas averaged an impressive 15.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2 steals per game as a senior, earning multiple Player of the Year honors in Florida. When he first signed with LSU, McMahon praised him as an "athletic 6-7 wing who will bring perimeter scoring and explosiveness." McMahon also highlighted Thomas' "great size and the versatility to defend multiple positions," along with his "ability to shoot the three and attack the basket off the bounce."

In short, Thomas is an athletic wing with serious two-way potential. He's at his best when attacking the rim and using his length to disrupt opposing offenses. While he won't be expected to log heavy minutes right away—with Terrence Brown, Matt Able, Neoklis Avdalas, and Maximo Adams expected to handle the bulk of perimeter duties—Thomas projects as a high-upside developmental piece who could become a consistent threat on both ends of the floor. For a UNC team looking to add depth on the wing, this commitment is a major win.
