Earning a berth in the America East Conference men’s lacrosse tournament might normally be cause for celebration. For UMBC interim coach Craig Chick, it was business as usual. “The job’s not done just yet,” he said after the Retrievers polished off a 16-11 victory over visiting NJIT on Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium in Catonsville.

For the UMBC men's lacrosse team, clinching a spot in the America East Conference tournament is a significant achievement, but for interim coach Craig Chick, it's simply the next step. "The job’s not done just yet," Chick stated after the Retrievers secured a 16-11 home victory over NJIT this past Saturday. "We’ve got more to do, and our goal is to fight and compete for the America East championship. So we’ll keep on battling."

The win, powered by a five-goal, one-assist performance from junior attackman Ryan Demato, marks the team's fourth straight victory. With a 4-2 conference record, UMBC has locked in its place in the upcoming four-team postseason tournament, hosted by defending champion UAlbany.

This run to the playoffs is particularly impressive given the profound adversity the program has faced this season. Since late September, the team has navigated the campaign without former head coach Ryan Moran, who was placed on administrative leave and later dismissed following serious off-field allegations within the program.

Through the turmoil, the players have remained focused on the field. "You just face adversity head on," Coach Chick remarked, choosing to keep the team's attention fixed on lacrosse. "That’s all we’ve been preaching, and that’s all we’ve been trying to do."

Their resilience has not gone unnoticed. From a 1-6 start, the Retrievers have fought back to become a legitimate contender, thrilling supporters in the process. As they prepare for the conference tournament, this UMBC squad exemplifies the toughness and perseverance that defines sports at every level.
