The second-ranked Hawaii men's volleyball team isn't looking back. Their focus is locked on a massive opportunity this Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. With a win over No. 18 Cal State Northridge, the Rainbow Warriors can clinch the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Big West Championship, a crucial advantage in the postseason chase.
Hawaii (24-4, 7-1) holds a slim one-game lead over Long Beach State. Securing the top seed would not only mean a regular-season title but also a direct path to the conference semifinals. "We haven't had a chance to do something like this too often," said Coach Charlie Wade. "We want to take care of business."
Their momentum hit a speed bump last Saturday with a road loss to UC San Diego, which snapped an eight-game win streak. The match was complicated by key absences: star setter Tread Rosenthal was out ill, and the middle blocker position took a double hit with injuries to Justin Todd and Trevell Jordan.
The good news for Warriors fans? Rosenthal is expected to be ready for Friday's pivotal match. The status of the middle blockers, however, remains a question mark. Wade is hopeful for their return, quipping they might need some "duct tape" to get back on the court, highlighting the team's resilience.
Despite the loss, Hawaii's national standing remains strong. They jumped to No. 1 in key analytical rankings (RPI/KPI) and held firm at No. 2 in the national poll. Every match now is critical for NCAA Tournament positioning, with the new 12-team field set to be revealed later this month.
They can't afford to overlook CSUN. Though winless in conference play, the Matadors have proven they can push top teams to the limit, taking both UCSD and Long Beach State to five sets this season. They also broke a long losing streak in Honolulu with a win here earlier this year. Junior opposite Jalen Phillips, fresh off surpassing 1,000 career kills, will be a focal point of their attack.
For Hawaii, it's a straightforward equation: win on home court, secure the top seed, and control their destiny as the postseason arrives.
