A former 3-star basketball prospect is transferring from the University of Pacific to the University of Hawaii.
Kellen Hampton, who is 6 feet 7 and 220 pounds, said he signed a commitment contract and will join the Rainbow Warriors in June. He will have four years of UH eligibility.
“Hawaii’s an awesome place,” Hampton said. “I love what the coaches are talking about. … I think it will be a great opportunity to play for Hawaii.”
As a Moreau Catholic High School senior in the Bay Area, Hampton averaged 19.8 points, sinking 41% of his 3-point shots, and was named the Mission Valley Athletic League’s 2025 Most Valuable Player.
In the first round of the CIF NorCal Division I playoffs, Hampton scored 43 points, including 21 in the fourth quarter, to help the Mariners upset No. 6 Dougherty Valley High School. He also scored 19 points against Kamehameha and 21 against Mid-Pacific in the Merv Lopes Invitational.
Arizona State, Creighton and Mississippi State were among the school to make scholarship offers. But Hampton chose Pacific largely because of assistant coaches Clay Wilson and Senque Carey. Both coaches left UOP ahead of the past season, with Wilson joining the UH staff. By mutual agreement, Hampton redshirted during the 2025-26 season. He entered the transfer portal two weeks ago.
“With Coach Clay at Hawaii, and with Senque recommending Hawaii, as well, I figured it would be a great spot for me to continue my college career,” Hampton said.
Carey was an assistant coach under UH interim head coach Benjy Taylor during the ‘Bows’ 2024-15 season.
“I’ve been to Hawaii three times,” Hampton said. “It’s an amazing place. To go to college there will be amazing.”
Hampton is the seventh transfer to commit to UH this month. With 2025 commit Scotty Belnap returning from a two-year church mission, Isaiah Kerr and Tanner Cuff re-signing, the ‘Bows now have 10 players under contract for the 2026-27 season.
