In a troubling incident during Saturday's Serie A clash, Udinese forward Keinan Davis has accused Cagliari defender Alberto Dossena of directing a racial slur at him. The allegation surfaced after Udinese's 2-0 victory at Cagliari, casting a shadow over what should have been a celebratory moment for the visiting side.
As the match neared its conclusion, Davis—who is Black—reacted with visible anger and immediately alerted the referee to something he claimed was said from the stands. The tension escalated after the final whistle, with teammates having to separate the two players.
Taking to Instagram after the game, Davis posted a story tagging Dossena alongside a photo of the defender, writing: "This racist coward called me a monkey today during the game. I hope the Serie A association will do something about this but we will see." The post quickly gained attention, sparking widespread discussion across the football community.
Dossena responded roughly an hour later with his own Instagram statement, firmly denying the accusation. "Being accused of racism saddens and hurts me," he wrote. "It is a very serious accusation, it would never cross my mind to address another person, a colleague with an insult of that kind. It is the first time that such a situation has happened to me in which I have to defend myself from a defamatory accusation. Such behavior is the furthest thing from my culture and education."
Udinese released a statement expressing full support for their forward, though they stopped short of naming Dossena directly. "Udinese Calcio expresses utmost solidarity and full support for Keinan Davis who was subjected to shameful racist insults by a player from the opposing team during this afternoon's match," the club said. "The club reiterates its firm condemnation of such deplorable acts which seriously damage the image and values of the sport we love. Udinese will defend Keinan in every way and hopes for a rapid resolution of the incident by the sports justice bodies in which it has full confidence."
Meanwhile, Cagliari teammates and coach Fabio Pisacane have rallied behind Dossena, insisting they believe he never made any racist remarks. "I've known Alberto Dossena for years, I know what values he has, and it doesn't even cross my mind," Pisacane stated, adding to the growing divide in accounts of the incident.
As Serie A authorities prepare to investigate, this case adds to a long and troubling history of racial abuse in Italian football—a sport that continues to grapple with how to effectively combat discrimination both on and off the pitch. For now, the football world waits to see what action will be taken, and whether justice will prevail for the player at the center of this ugly controversy.
