The No. 5 UCLA Bruins softball team found themselves on the wrong side of a slugfest Saturday, dropping their second consecutive game to the No. 11 Oregon Ducks with a 13-11 loss at Easton Stadium in Los Angeles. After a tough opener, the Bruins' bats came alive, but Oregon's relentless offense proved too much to overcome.
Unlike Friday's series opener, UCLA's hitters found their rhythm early, racking up 13 hits and 11 runs. But Oregon countered with an even more explosive 16-hit, 13-run performance, putting pressure on UCLA's pitching staff from the first pitch. Senior right-hander Taylor Tinsley and freshman lefty Natalie Cable struggled to contain the Ducks' lineup, which seemed to find gaps and barrels all afternoon.
The game started with a bang as Oregon launched a solo home run in the top of the first. But the Bruins answered in dramatic fashion, with senior utility player Megan Grant crushing a two-run homer to right field, giving UCLA an early 2-1 lead and igniting the home crowd.
The momentum swung back and forth in a second inning that felt like a rollercoaster. Oregon tied the game with a two-run homer of their own, only for UCLA to respond with back-to-back two-run blasts from sophomore outfielder Kaniya Bragg and infielder Rylee Slimp. Suddenly, the Bruins were up 6-2 and looking in control.
But the Ducks clawed back in the third, tying the game at 6-6 on a double that was aided by a costly throwing error from UCLA's defense. That miscue proved to be a turning point, as Oregon seized the momentum and added three more runs in the fourth to take a 9-6 lead.
The Bruins refused to go quietly. In the bottom of the fifth, senior infielder Jordan Woolery delivered the team's fourth two-run homer of the game, cutting Oregon's lead to just one run at 9-8. It set up a tense finish, but Oregon had one more burst left.
In the top of the seventh, the Ducks put the game out of reach with a four-run rally on three hits, extending their lead to 13-8. UCLA mounted one last charge in the bottom of the inning, as freshman infielder Bri Alejandre crushed a three-run homer to bring the Bruins within two. But that was as close as they would get, as Oregon closed out the 13-11 victory.
The Bruins will look to avoid a sweep in Sunday's series finale, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. PT at Easton Stadium. After two high-scoring battles, UCLA will need to tighten up defensively and find a way to slow down Oregon's red-hot bats to salvage the series.
