The UCLA Bruins' backcourt just got a major boost. Head coach Mick Cronin secured his third transfer portal commitment of the offseason Sunday night, landing former Texas Tech guard Jaylen Petty.

Petty, a Seattle native, brings immediate experience and a coveted skillset to Westwood. As a freshman for a 23-win Red Raiders team that reached the NCAA Tournament's Round of 32, he proved he belonged at the high-major level. Starting 22 games and averaging over 30 minutes, Petty posted 9.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest.

His most exciting attribute for UCLA fans will be his shooting stroke. The 6'1" guard shot a blistering 38% from three-point range on nearly six attempts per game. In fact, over two-thirds of his total field goal attempts came from behind the arc, showcasing a specialized, high-value offensive role he can reprise for the Bruins.

With the departures of Donovan Dent and Skyy Clark, there is a clear opportunity in the UCLA backcourt. Petty, a former four-star recruit ranked as a top-10 point guard in his class, will compete with returners Eric Freeny and Trent Perry for significant minutes. His proven shooting and readiness for high-level play make him a perfect fit for Cronin's system as UCLA looks to bounce back.
