The Cincinnati Bearcats basketball program is making moves both on the court and on the sidelines. Head coach Jerrod Calhoun announced two major additions on May 1 that signal the team's commitment to building a winning culture for the 2026-27 season and beyond.

First up, the coaching staff is getting a serious boost. Mike Fuline, the highly successful longtime head coach at Mount Union, is joining the Bearcats as an assistant coach and high school relations coordinator. Fuline led the Purple Raiders for 15 seasons, turning them into a Division III powerhouse. Under his guidance, Mount Union won five Ohio Athletic Conference regular-season titles, three OAC Tournament championships, and made five NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. The highlight? A run to the national championship game in 2023.

"Mike is one of the most successful coaches in the state of Ohio," Calhoun said. "He started at the high school level and earned this opportunity. He will provide tremendous knowledge on both sides of the ball and will strengthen our relationships with the high school coaches in the state."

Fuline's resume is stacked with accolades: eight 20-win seasons, OAC Coach of the Year honors in 2014 and 2020, and Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year awards in 2015 and 2020. He also developed four All-Americans and 38 all-conference selections during his tenure. For a program looking to connect with local talent and build from the ground up, Fuline's experience is a game-changer.

But the Bearcats aren't just strengthening the bench—they're adding size and athleticism to the roster. The team officially signed David Iweze, a 6-foot-10, 240-pound forward who transferred from Utah State. Iweze, a native of Roanoke, Texas, redshirted last season as a freshman, using the year to develop his game and adjust to the college level.

"David is a really talented young prospect," Calhoun said. "He will bring a physical presence to our group. David made significant strides in his first year in college."

For Bearcats fans, these additions signal a clear direction: Calhoun is building a program that values experience, relationships, and raw potential. With Fuline's deep ties to Ohio high school basketball and Iweze's promising upside, Cincinnati is setting the stage for a competitive future. Whether you're gearing up for game day or just following the rebuild, these are the kind of moves that make you want to rep the red and black with pride.
