Illinois basketball fans hoping to see Ty Rodgers back in Champaign next season received disappointing news Thursday. The veteran wing, who had publicly stated his intention to return after the Illini's Final Four run, has instead entered the transfer portal, as first reported by ESPN's Jeff Borzello.
Rodgers' departure marks a tough end to his Illini career, which was derailed by significant setbacks. After contributing as a starter on the 2023-24 Elite Eight team, where he averaged 6.2 points and 5.3 rebounds, Rodgers took a redshirt year in 2024-25 following a roster influx of new talent. Tragically, his planned comeback for the 2025-26 season was scrapped when he tore the patellar tendon in his left knee during an off-season pickup game, sidelining him for the entire national championship pursuit.
Despite not playing the last two seasons, the 6-foot-6 wing remained a valued cultural presence within the program. Now, with two seasons of eligibility remaining, Rodgers will look for a fresh start where he can finally get back on the court. His next destination will be gaining a tough, physical player known for his rebounding and defensive versatility, though his outside shooting remains a noted area for development.
