Two LSU Tigers Stars Named To 'Most-Feared Defensive Players' List

As Princewill Umanmielen and Ty Benefield dominate preseason rankings, the LSU Tigers' reloaded defense looks to maintain its terrifying reputation under the program's new coaching era.

The LSU Tigers are entering a new era under head coach Lane Kiffin, and expectations are sky-high from day one. With a roster packed with talent and a coaching staff that knows how to win, the Tigers are poised to make noise on both sides of the ball. But it's the defense that's generating serious buzz—and for good reason.

Defensive coordinator Blake Baker returns with most of his staff intact, providing much-needed continuity. The only major shakeup is along the defensive line, and if anything, that unit looks even stronger. While the Tigers lost key players like Mansoor Delane and Harold Perkins to the NFL draft, they've reloaded with ready-made replacements who are eager to prove themselves.

That depth and talent haven't gone unnoticed. CBS Sports' Brad Crawford recently released his list of the 26 "most-feared" defensive players in college football, and two LSU stars made the cut: Ty Benefield and Princewill Umanmielen.

Benefield might not have the flashiest name among LSU's transfer portal haul, but his résumé speaks volumes. The 20-year-old has been a workhorse since his freshman season at Boise State, logging over 2,100 defensive snaps according to Pro Football Focus. His stat line is eye-popping: 235 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, three sacks, five interceptions, and 12 pass breakups. He's a versatile chess piece that Baker can deploy all over the field, plugging any gaps in a secondary that's already loaded with talent. Expect Benefield to be a difference-maker as he chases an early NFL draft call.

Then there's Umanmielen, the edge rusher LSU desperately needed. Last season, the Tigers' pass rush was a glaring weakness—Harold Perkins led the team with just four sacks, and no true EDGE defender had more than two. Enter Umanmielen, who transferred from Ole Miss after a breakout year. In 2024, he racked up nine sacks and 13 tackles for loss, giving LSU the explosive pass-rush threat it lacked. Sure, it was his first year of high-level production, but the confidence in Baton Rouge is that he's just getting started.

With these two leading the charge, LSU's defense looks reloaded, relentless, and ready to strike fear into opposing offenses. It's a terrifying combination—and exactly what Tigers fans love to see.
