The Minnesota Twins have hit a significant roadblock in their season as right-hander Taj Bradley lands on the 15-day injured list with right pectoral inflammation, retroactive to Wednesday. The news comes as a tough blow for a pitcher who has been nothing short of stellar in his first full year with the team.
Bradley has been the anchor of the Twins' staff, posting an impressive 4-1 record and a 2.87 ERA across eight starts. The three-year veteran, who once ranked as a top prospect with the Tampa Bay Rays, has also led the team with 52 strikeouts and 47 innings pitched—numbers that speak to his growing role as a reliable arm on the mound.
Fortunately, an MRI conducted in Minneapolis revealed no significant damage to the pectoral muscle, offering a glimmer of hope in an otherwise challenging situation. Bradley is now set to consult with Dr. Keith Meister for a second opinion before a course of action is determined.
"Any time we get an MRI that comes back clean, that's the best-case scenario," Twins manager Derek Shelton said after a hard-fought 2-1, 11-inning victory over the Cleveland Guardians. "Once we get through the second opinion, we can start a course of action."
Bradley's absence adds to an already depleted rotation. Minnesota now has three-fifths of its starting staff on the injured list, joining Pablo López—who is out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery—and rookie Mick Abel, who is battling right elbow inflammation. It's a significant challenge for a team that has relied heavily on its pitching depth.
The Twins originally acquired Bradley from the Tampa Bay Rays on July 31 in exchange for Griffin Jax, but his transition was far from smooth. Limited to just six starts over the final two months of last season, Bradley finished with a 6-8 record and a 5.05 ERA between the two clubs. This season, however, has marked a true comeback, making this injury all the more frustrating for the team and its fans.
To fill Bradley's spot on the roster, the Twins have recalled right-hander Travis Adams from Triple-A St. Paul. Bradley was originally scheduled to pitch the series finale Sunday in Cleveland, but Minnesota will now turn to right-handed reliever Andrew Morris for a bullpen game instead.
For a team fighting to stay competitive, every game counts—and every healthy arm matters. As the Twins navigate this latest setback, all eyes will be on Bradley's recovery and the hope that he can return to anchor the rotation once again.
