When you're an NBA veteran like Tristan Thompson, you learn that the most valuable plays don't always happen on the court. Sometimes, they happen over dinner.

The former fourth overall draft pick (2011) recently sat down with "Market Bubble" to share how a pre-game meal with Silicon Valley insiders during a road trip against the Golden State Warriors turned into one of his smartest investments yet.

Thompson, who last played during the 2024-25 season, recalled attending exclusive dinners where conversations shifted from basketball to the future of technology—specifically artificial intelligence. Instead of just listening, he decided to act.

"I was like, 'Hey, man, I like what you're talking about. You sound transparent,'" Thompson said. "I'm like, 'All right, man, here's a check. I wanna get in the game.'"

That check went to Anthropic, the AI safety and research company behind Claude. According to Bloomberg, Anthropic is currently in discussions to raise $30 billion at a staggering $900 billion valuation—proof that Thompson's early bet was a slam dunk.

But Thompson didn't stop there. "The cool thing was I was able to get in early and bring in all of my other buddies to make a bigger check," he explained, referencing how he used a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to loop in his network.

Now, Thompson is bridging his two worlds—tech and sports—in a powerful way. On CoinMarketCap's live podcast, he noted that while AI has transformed nearly every industry, "it hasn't touched sports as of yet." That's where TracyAI comes in.

As co-founder, chief content officer, and lead advisor of TracyAI, Thompson is helping build an AI-powered sports analytics agent designed to revolutionize how athletes train, perform, and connect with fans. "Imagine having an app where you can push to talk and she'll verbalize real-time analytics and stats right on the spot," he told Sports Business Journal. "That's the cool thing about this AI technology—it can do things that an analytics staffer can't do."

Whether you're hitting the gym or hitting the boardroom, Thompson's story is a reminder that the best moves often happen when you're willing to bet on yourself—and bring your team along for the ride.
