Michigan State football is making a strong impression on one of the Sunshine State's top running backs. Caleb Mattison, a dynamic playmaker from Jacksonville's Bishop Kenny High School, has the Spartans firmly in the mix following a productive spring visit, with a key official visit locked in for May 29th.
On the field, Mattison's production speaks volumes. A compact and powerful 5-foot-9, 200-pound back, he exploded for 1,733 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns last season alone, bringing his career total to nearly 4,000 yards. His blend of speed and power is further showcased on the track, where he competes in sprints and jumping events.
While holding over 50 scholarship offers, Mattison has connected deeply with the energy in East Lansing. He cites strong relationships with head coach Pat Fitzgerald, offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan, and running backs coach Devon Spalding. "Something I like about them is that they are all high energy on and off the field," Mattison noted, highlighting the staff's infectious enthusiasm.
The appeal extends beyond the gridiron. Mattison, who carries a 3.1 GPA, was impressed by Michigan State's academic support system. "They want everybody to succeed in life and become young men," he said, valuing the program's holistic approach to development.
Interestingly, the Florida native is not deterred by the prospect of Big Ten weather. "I have no problem playing in the cold," Mattison stated. "That’s just getting me ready to play on Monday nights and Sundays," showcasing his long-term professional aspirations.
With an official visit also set to UConn and interest in other northern schools, Mattison's recruitment is heating up. He plans to make his commitment before his senior season begins, putting Michigan State in a prime position to land a versatile and high-character offensive weapon.
In other recruiting news, the Spartans' momentum continues on the defensive line. Michigan State recently offered Springboro, Ohio defensive lineman Carter Napier during his unofficial visit, prompting him to quickly schedule an official visit for June 5th. The 6-foot-3, 260-pound, high-motor prospect will also take officials to Iowa State and West Virginia.
