NHL forward Travis Konecny is facing heavy criticism after a series of controversial moments in a heated first-round clash between the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins.
The latest flashpoint came in Game 5, when Konecny cross-checked Sidney Crosby after the final buzzer, sparking a large scrum.
NHL analyst Josh Yohe did not hold back in his assessment of the play. He wrote on X that Konecny’s actions showed ‘clear intent to injure.’
“It’s a nasty series, and both teams have crossed lines,” Yohe said. “But no one has been cheaper/more dirty in this series than Konecny, whose cross-check of Crosby after the game had ended was a clear intent to injure.”

Yohe also referenced an earlier incident where Konecny appeared to kick Bryan Rust during a Game 3 altercation.
“Earlier in this series, Konecny tried to kick Rust,” Yohe added. “Very dirty player.”
Game 5 has added more fuel to the rivalry. The Penguins secured a 3-2 win, cutting the Flyers’ series lead to 3-2 after trailing 3-0. The matchup has now turned into one of the most physical battles of the 2026 playoffs.
Philadelphia’s approach in the series has centered on shutting down Crosby. Players like Travis Sanheim have used aggressive defensive pressure and repeated cross-checks (in game 2) to limit space for Pittsburgh’s captain. Garnet Hathaway has also targeted Crosby, adding to the growing hostility between the two teams.

Despite the physical targeting, Crosby delivered again in Game 5. He recorded two assists and showed resilience after taking a painful shot to his left knee. His leadership has helped Pittsburgh mount a comeback, with belief growing inside the locker room.
Crosby emphasized the team’s mindset after the game, stating, “We’ve done a great job of handling adversity. Again, here, we’re faced with more. It doesn’t get any easier… we have a lot of belief in our group, and we’ve done it time and time again. We’ve got to go do it again.”
After another win, the Penguins now head into Game 6 with renewed confidence. With emotions running high, the series now shifts back to Philadelphia under intense pressure.
