Just a week into the 2026 college basketball transfer portal, plenty of big commitments have already occurred

The college basketball transfer portal has only been open for a week, but the landscape is already shifting dramatically. With thousands of players seeking new homes before the window closes on April 21, some major dominoes have fallen early, creating clear winners and losers as teams build their rosters for the 2026-27 season.

Leading the charge as the biggest winner so far is the Louisville Cardinals. Head coach Pat Kelsey, entering his third year, has made a massive statement by securing two elite transfers: the portal's top-ranked player, center Flory Bidunga from Kansas, and No. 16-ranked point guard Jackson Shelstad from Oregon. The duo took a joint visit and quickly committed, signaling Louisville's serious intent to contend after a second-round NCAA Tournament exit last season. Bidunga is a transformative defensive anchor and rim protector, while a healthy Shelstad—who averaged 13.7 points and shot 37.9% from three in 2024-25—could be the dynamic floor general the Cardinals need.

Not far behind is Texas, which has aggressively bolstered its lineup. The Longhorns landed former Colorado guard Isaiah Johnson, ranked No. 12, and followed up by snagging No. 7-ranked forward David Punch from TCU. Punch is expected to form a formidable frontcourt partnership with Matas Vokietaitis, who recently announced his return to Austin. These moves position Texas as a major threat in the SEC.

On the other side of the coin, Kansas finds itself in a challenging position. The Jayhawks have been hit hard, losing their star big man Flory Bidunga to Louisville, along with key contributors Bryson Tiller, Elmarko Jackson, and Jamari McDowell. Replacing that level of talent will be a top priority for Bill Self and his staff in the coming weeks.

As the portal continues to churn, these early commitments set the tone for an offseason that promises more high-stakes roster moves. For fans watching their teams reload, the action is just heating up.
