Every rookie needs a mentor—and for New England Patriots linebacker Gabe Jacas, that mentor turned out to be a future Hall of Famer. The young edge rusher's path to the NFL took a pivotal turn after he spent a week training in Atlanta with Justin Houston, a four-time Pro Bowler and former First-Team All-Pro linebacker.

The connection wasn't random. Joe Kim, the Patriots' former director of skill development who previously worked with Jacas at Illinois, helped set up the training session. When Jacas asked how to best use his time, Kim knew exactly who to call. "What he learned from Justin changed him a little bit," Kim explained. "When they get somebody that's been there, done that, telling him to do it, it hits a little differently."

That week with Houston transformed Jacas' entire approach. He came back with a completely new mindset—asking himself tough questions about nutrition, workout plans, daily skill development, and training camp preparation. It's the kind of shift that separates good players from great ones.

Jacas was already making noise in college. Known as one of the most violent edge rushers in the nation, he posted four sacks in back-to-back seasons before exploding for eight sacks in 2024 and a career-high 11 sacks in 2025. The Illinois standout also forced three fumbles in each of his last two seasons—a testament to his relentless, explosive style of play.

The Patriots saw enough to trade up in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft to secure him. Jacas is all business on the field, and with that high ceiling, he might finally give New England the true No. 1 edge rusher they've been searching for.
