Dylan Cease has been living up to his $210 million contract this season

The Toronto Blue Jays made a massive splash this offseason, signing right-handed starter Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million contract. And based on his latest performance, he's proving to be worth every penny.

Cease entered the season with something to prove. Despite being one of the most dominant strikeout pitchers in baseball, he struggled in 2025 with the San Diego Padres, posting a 4.55 ERA over 32 starts. But this year, the 30-year-old has refined his arsenal and looks like the ace Toronto desperately needed.

On Friday, Cease delivered a masterclass against the Los Angeles Angels, leading the Blue Jays to a 2-0 victory that snapped a four-game losing streak. He pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just five hits while striking out 10 batters without issuing a single walk. It was his second consecutive seven-inning outing, showcasing both his dominance and durability.

That performance pushed Cease's season strikeout total to 66, which leads the American League and ranks second in all of Major League Baseball, trailing only Milwaukee Brewers' Jacob Misiorowski (70). Through eight starts and 45.1 innings, Cease now boasts a sparkling 2.58 ERA.

His emergence as the staff ace couldn't come at a better time for the Blue Jays. Toronto's rotation has been decimated by injuries, with Trey Yesavage, Cody Ponce, Shane Bieber, Max Scherzer, and Jose Berrios all spending time on the injured list. Yesavage has since returned from a shoulder impingement, but Bieber, Scherzer, and Berrios remain sidelined—with Berrios potentially facing a setback after recent MRIs revealed right elbow inflammation.

With Cease anchoring the rotation and delivering elite strikeout numbers, the Blue Jays have a reliable cornerstone to build around as they navigate their injury challenges. If he keeps pitching like this, that $210 million investment is looking like a bargain.
