The Spartans secured a massive recruit from the OHL on Tuesday.

The Michigan State Spartans just landed a massive recruit—and we're not just talking about his 6-foot-5, 225-pound frame. Ethan Belchetz, a top prospect for the 2026 NHL Draft, announced his commitment to Michigan State University on Tuesday, sending a jolt through the college hockey world.

"Excited and honored to announce my commitment to play NCAA Division I hockey at Michigan State University," the Windsor Spitfires left winger wrote on Instagram. "Huge thank you to my family, coaches, teammates, trainers, and everyone who has supported me throughout this journey."

Belchetz's announcement comes at a pivotal time for the Spartans, who were already seen as a national championship contender for next season. Now, head coach Adam Nightingale has added a potential top-10 NHL Draft pick to an already stacked roster, making Michigan State an even more formidable force on the ice.

The Oakville, Ontario native is one of the biggest players in his draft class, and he knows how to use that size. Known for his physical play, Belchetz also boasts an excellent shot. While he's not the fastest skater, he moves well for a player his size, making him a versatile threat on the wing.

Belchetz's journey to this point has been anything but ordinary. He played youth hockey with the Oakville Rangers, where he averaged just over a point per game before exploding offensively in his final season—doubling his points production from 42 to 84. That breakout performance earned him the top overall pick in the 2024 OHL Draft by the Windsor Spitfires.

Despite strong regular-season performances, Belchetz has been plagued by injuries, never playing a playoff game in his two seasons with the Spitfires. This year, he suffered a fractured left clavicle in early March, requiring surgery and cutting short his opportunity to boost his draft stock. His draft ranking slipped slightly after a quiet showing at the CHL USA Prospect Challenge, but his upside remains undeniable.

With his commitment to Michigan State, Belchetz is set to bring his blend of size, skill, and grit to the NCAA. For Spartans fans, the future just got a whole lot brighter.
