A look at Tommy Carr’s journey to Michigan and his outlook for 2026.

When you carry a name like Carr in Michigan football circles, expectations come with the territory. But Tommy Carr isn't just living up to a legacy—he's building his own.

The true freshman quarterback arrived in Ann Arbor this spring with a pedigree that reads like a football dynasty. As the grandson of legendary Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr and brother of Notre Dame standout CJ Carr, Tommy has football in his blood. But it's his own talent that has Wolverines fans buzzing.

Standing 6-foot-4 and 185 pounds, Carr was a four-star recruit in the 2026 class, ranked the No. 316 overall player and No. 22 quarterback nationally. His senior season at nearby Saline High School was nothing short of spectacular: 2,737 passing yards, 37 touchdowns against just six interceptions, and a crisp 69.3% completion rate. He added 276 rushing yards and eight more scores on the ground, showing the dual-threat ability that translates so well to modern college football.

Carr initially committed to Miami (Ohio) before flipping to Michigan in November 2025—a decision that thrilled a fanbase always hungry for homegrown talent. Now an early enrollee, he's already turning heads. In Michigan's spring game, Carr completed 21 of 30 passes for 143 yards and added 59 rushing yards, displaying the poise and playmaking that has coaches and fans alike excited.

"He's got that 'it' factor for a quarterback," Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham said in April. "That confidence, that field general mentality. The way he carries himself. He's a football junkie. I'm in the facility at 10 at night and I walk by the quarterback room and there's Tommy Carr watching film all by himself."

While star quarterback Bryce Underwood is locked in as the starter, Carr is making a strong case for backup duties. His main competition is transfer Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi from Colorado State, who brings 28 career starts of experience. But Carr's rapid development and natural leadership are making the battle one to watch.

For a program steeped in tradition, Tommy Carr represents the perfect blend of past and future. Whether he's backing up Underwood this season or leading the offense down the road, one thing is clear: the Carr legacy at Michigan is in excellent hands.
