In a move that bridges decades of football history, the Iowa Hawkeyes are welcoming back one of their own. Tom Moore, the 87-year-old coaching legend who will turn 88 during the upcoming season, is returning to his alma mater to serve as a senior consultant to head coach Kirk Ferentz and offensive adviser.
Moore's journey with Iowa began in the late 1950s, when he lettered as a quarterback and kicker for the Hawkeyes in 1959-60. After his playing days, he launched his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Iowa—a humble start that would lead to an extraordinary run through both college and professional football.
From those early days in Iowa City, Moore's career took him to coaching stops at Dayton, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, and Minnesota before making the leap to the NFL. In 1977, he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers as receivers coach, beginning a pro football odyssey that would include stints with the Vikings, Lions, Saints, and Colts. He later served as an offensive consultant for the Jets, Titans, and Cardinals, and most recently worked with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2019 to 2025.
The numbers tell part of the story: Moore is a four-time Super Bowl champion, winning two rings with the Steelers and one each with the Colts and Buccaneers. But for Ferentz, it's the wisdom that comes with those championships that matters most.
"I have known Tom Moore for over a decade and am thrilled that he has agreed to join our program in an advisory role," Ferentz said. "Coach Moore has had a long and very successful career in football. He was a player at Iowa, coached at the collegiate level and spent many years working alongside Hall of Fame coaches in the National Football League. I am grateful that a four-time Super Bowl champion will share his wisdom and perspectives with us — coaches and players."
For Hawkeye fans, Moore's return represents more than just a coaching addition—it's a full-circle moment for a man whose football journey started right there in Iowa City. As the 2026 season approaches, all eyes will be on how this veteran offensive mind helps shape the next chapter of Iowa football.
