Detroit Tigers fans, there's finally some good news on the Tarik Skubal front. Manager A.J. Hinch dropped an encouraging update Friday: the team's ace has already started throwing as part of his rehab from elbow surgery.
Just over a week after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on May 6 to remove loose bodies from his elbow, Skubal began his throwing program this week while on a rehab assignment with Single-A Lakeland. It's a remarkably swift start that has the Tigers' clubhouse buzzing.
Hinch revealed that Skubal texted him Thursday evening, sharing how his elbow feels "good and unburdened" after the procedure. The early phase of his recovery focuses on two things: extending throwing distance and building up intensity.
"It's distance and intensity, and he feels great," Hinch said. "I was texting back and forth with him last night, and he was super excited about just the general feeling that it didn't feel weird. It doesn't feel awkward. It's not guarded. I've seen video of it. That sort of freedom mentally and physically is a great sign."
While this is undoubtedly promising, the Tigers are keeping expectations measured. Skubal remains on the 15-day injured list and isn't expected back in the active rotation for another two to three months. Hinch emphasized this is a "step-by-step" process, with the next milestone being a bullpen session once Skubal builds up his throwing routine.
The team plans to closely monitor the left-hander for any swelling, discomfort, or execution issues that might signal setbacks. Given the unusual speed of his return to throwing, the Tigers are working hand-in-hand with doctors to follow protocol carefully.
"We've been in touch with the doctor and making sure we're going by the protocol because this is a unique set of circumstances—him throwing so soon, when volume was not impacted," Hinch explained. "The big test will be how he responds."
For now, Skubal's early progress is a welcome sign for a Tigers team that has missed its ace on the mound. Every positive update brings us one step closer to seeing him back in the Motor City.
