The Detroit Tigers ended a frustrating month on a high note, storming back with four late runs to escape Atlanta with a 5-2 victory and avoid a three-game sweep at Truist Park. It was a much-needed win that snapped a 10-game losing streak against the Braves and pushed the Tigers to a 14-13 record to close out April.
After a stretch plagued by injuries, inconsistent bats, and bullpen struggles—not to mention a grueling road schedule—the Tigers showed real grit when it mattered most. Held to just one run since the third inning, the offense finally came alive in the eighth.
Trailing 2-1, Kerry Carpenter ignited the rally with a triple off the center-field wall, and Matt Vierling followed by ripping a double into the left-field corner to tie the game. After a walk to Hao-Yu Lee and a strikeout, rookie Kevin McGonigle—who extended his MLB-leading on-base streak to 27 games—drew his third walk of the night to load the bases. Gleyber Torres, already with three singles on the day, then delivered a sacrifice fly to center to put the Tigers ahead.
But Vierling wasn't done. In the ninth, with two outs, pinch-hitter Wenceel Perez walked and Vierling smashed a liner that third baseman Austin Riley couldn't handle. The ball scooted past left fielder Mike Yastrzemski, and Perez—with an aggressive send from third base coach Joey Cora—raced all the way home from first. Dillon Dingler added an insurance run with a double, though Lee was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first.
On the mound, lefty Framber Valdez gutted through a tough outing, and reliever Drew Anderson tossed two scoreless frames to bridge the gap. Closer Kyle Finnegan, who threw 29 pitches the night before, shook off the workload and slammed the door in the ninth for his first save of the season.
The win marked the Tigers' franchise-record 20th road game already this season—a quarter of their entire road schedule—and they managed to grind out six wins away from home. It wasn't always pretty, but this series-salvaging victory gave the Tigers some much-needed momentum heading into May.
