The Detroit Tigers turned back the clock and dusted off their signature "pitching chaos" strategy Sunday, executing it to near perfection in a 7-1 series-clinching win over the Texas Rangers at Comerica Park.
With ace Casey Mize sidelined by a groin strain, manager AJ Hinch deployed six different relievers over nine innings—a tactic that first helped the Tigers storm into the postseason two years ago. While it may have lost some luster last season, Sunday’s performance was a masterclass in matchup management.
Hinch zeroed in on the Rangers’ two most dangerous left-handed bats—leadoff man Brandon Nimmo and No. 3 hitter Corey Seager—matching them with lefty pitchers every time they came to the plate. Tyler Holton handled the first inning, then Brant Hurter took over for the next two trips. The result: Nimmo and Seager combined for just 1-for-6 in those at-bats.
Meanwhile, Texas’s best right-handed hitters—Josh Jung, Jake Burger, and Ezequiel Duran—faced righties Brenan Hanifee and Ricky Vanasco. The only blemish came in the seventh, when Duran doubled off Vanasco, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on a groundout. Still, the bullpen collectively delivered what amounted to a quality start: seven innings, one run, five hits, six strikeouts, and just two walks.
Hurter carried the heaviest load, tossing 3⅓ scoreless innings while allowing only two hits. His final pitch induced a 3-6-3 double play from Seager in the sixth. Over 18 innings this season, Hurter has surrendered just three earned runs—a testament to his growing reliability.
Vanasco, making his season debut, struck out two in 1⅓ sharp innings.
On the offensive side, the Tigers needed a few innings to solve Rangers starter Jack Leiter, who looked dominant through the first four frames. That was a surprise given his recent struggles—15 earned runs in 20⅓ innings over his previous four starts. But Detroit’s bats eventually broke through, capped by a big blast from Spencer Torkelson that sealed the series win.
For Tigers fans, Sunday was a reminder of how creative pitching and timely hitting can turn a potential weakness into a winning formula. And with the bullpen firing on all cylinders, this team is proving they have more than one way to win.
