Tigers get bad news on Javier Baez after ankle injury on awkward play originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Detroit Tigers are atop the AL Central with a 15-15 record, but they were dealt some tough news following Tuesday's game against the Atlanta Braves.
Casey Mize left the game early and is now on the injured list. Javier Baez also left the game early after an awkward play at first base caused him to fall.
And on Wednesday, Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Baez is joining Mize on the injured list, as he will miss some time due to an ankle issue.
"Javier Baez has been placed on the injured list," Petzold writes. "To replace him, the Detroit Tigers called up infielder Jace Jung from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, April 29."
This roster move from the Tigers isn't completely unexpected, especially after Baez was taken off the field on Tuesday.
After trying to avoid the tag at first base from Matt Olson, Baez sustained the ankle injury, which has placed him on the injured list.
Kevin McGonigle, Jace Jung, Colt Keith, and Zach McKinstry, once he's healthy, will take over for Baez's role in the infield while he recovers on the injured list.

The 33-year-old, who was named an All-Star starter last season after an impressive first half, had a .256 batting average this season through 24 games played.
He had two homers, six RBIs, 10 runs scored, 20 hits, five doubles, and a .677 OPS on the season so far before this injury.
This is a tough blow for the Tigers, as a veteran and starter is now going to miss a bit of time due to this ankle issue, which he sustained in a freak accident against the Braves on April 28th.
