The Detroit Tigers found themselves in the middle of some high-stakes drama this week, and it's cost manager AJ Hinch a day in the dugout. Following a heated Tuesday night game against the Boston Red Sox, Major League Baseball handed down a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine to Hinch for the actions of his starting pitcher, Framber Valdez.
Hinch served his suspension during Wednesday night's series finale, watching from the clubhouse as his team took the field without him. The trouble started when Valdez was ejected from Tuesday's game for intentionally throwing at a Red Sox batter—a move that will now cost the left-hander a five-game suspension of his own.
Speaking to reporters before Wednesday's game, Hinch didn't shy away from the incident, calling it a frustrating night for both Valdez and the team. "It was an emotional night for him and us," Hinch explained. "I'll talk to him between now and his next start. I know he holds himself to a high bar. It's difficult when you put yourself in that position and all of a sudden the talk and the conversation is still there a day later. But it is what it is and you have to deal with your circumstances that you can be better at."
The Tigers skipper acknowledged that discipline was expected. "Generally, when you have an event like last night, where there's disruption in play and guys are kicked out of the game for throwing at somebody, that doesn't come for free," he said.
In the aftermath, speculation swirled that Valdez may have been tipping his pitches, with the Red Sox allegedly relaying his grip from the dugout. Hinch took a pragmatic view of the situation. "It's all fair," he said. "The best way to combat that is to clean up your own glove and your own pitches. If they were, that still falls on us."
For Tigers fans, it's a reminder that baseball's intensity can boil over in an instant—and that accountability starts at the top. As the team looks ahead, they'll hope Valdez can channel this frustration into sharper outings when he returns from his suspension.
