Tahlequah baseball is heading into the postseason with serious momentum, and the Tigers couldn't have scripted a better final week of regular-season action. After a dominant 12-0 road win over Summit Christian on Tuesday, April 28, the team followed it up with a gritty 2-1 home victory against Oktaha on Senior Night two days later—showing off the kind of balanced performance that wins championships.
"I've told them a hundred times—we can play with anyone if we play like that," said THS head coach Matt Cloud. "Our focus this week was staying loose. What do we have to lose? The looser they play, the better they are."
That philosophy paid off in a big way. Against Oktaha, the Tigers jumped ahead with two runs in the first inning and then relied on their defense and pitching to hold the line for the next six frames. It was exactly the kind of test Cloud has been looking for all season.
"I saw some resilience," Cloud added. "They made some tough plays. If the pitcher makes a mistake, they make a play behind him—that's what we've been after this year."
Throughout the season, Cloud has emphasized that strong play in any two of the three phases—pitching, hitting, and defense—can carry the team. With a deep lineup featuring senior shortstop Cutter Girdner and first baseman Kael Carey, junior Will Talburt, freshman Dustin Duvall, and sophomore Kohlson Caldwell rotating in the infield, the Tigers have the versatility to compete with anyone.
"I really believe we can play with anyone if we pitch and play defense," Cloud said. "We know we can get timely hits at the plate."
The win against a ranked Oktaha squad (No. 6 in Class 2A-I) was a confidence booster heading into the playoffs. The Tigers open postseason play Wednesday, May 6, against Shawnee at Bishop Kelley.
"If we can get through the first game, we think we can make a splash," Cloud said. "If we relax and don't get uptight, we'll be okay."
Just one day after the regular season wrapped up, the Tigers cleaned up in the District 5A-4 awards. First-team selections included seniors Sampson, Carey, and Girdner, juniors Talburt and Michael Torkelson, and freshman utility player Duvall. Junior right fielder Kael Dobbins earned an honorable mention.
With momentum, chemistry, and recognition in hand, Tahlequah baseball is ready to make some noise when it matters most.
