The Oklahoma City Thunder are off to a perfect start in their quest for back-to-back NBA championships, following a commanding Game 2 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night. But while the defending champs remain undefeated in the playoffs, the conversation around the league has shifted to something else entirely—especially among rival fans.
Social media is buzzing with accusations that Thunder players are flopping excessively, with critics claiming the referees aren't calling it. It's a familiar narrative for dominant teams, and Thunder supporters are embracing the villain label that comes with success.
"I think the best teams are going to be the best and they're going to get hate regardless," said Nathan Dominick, a Thunder fan. "You're successful when you start to become the villain," added Jerry Ramsey, a radio host on The Franchise.
As Oklahoma City cruises through the playoffs with a 6-0 record, the backlash has intensified. Online critics have been quick to label the team's style of play as "excessive flopping," but fans aren't buying it.
"This is not a topic if they are beating the Thunder on a regular basis," Ramsey noted. "Nobody was talking about Shai flopping a couple of years ago when they were winning 24-25 games."
Thunder supporters argue that the team's success is simply drawing attention to their disciplined play. "There is no foul baiting, he's drawing the foul," said Damoron Green, another fan. "They're touching, slapping, grabbing his arm."
While the slander might sting, fans recognize it's part of the territory for elite teams. "We had the same complaints for the Golden State Warriors back in the 2016, 2017, 2018 series," Dominick recalled. "We had the same thing early LeBron years when he was at Miami."
Rather than shying away from the criticism, many Thunder fans see it as motivation. "I think it's more of an admiration and a good thing as a whole team, as a way to push ourselves even more and perform better," Dominick said.
In a recent "share with 4" poll, fans weighed in on the officiating in the Thunder-Lakers series, with a staggering 75% giving it a thumbs down. For Thunder faithful, though, the noise only fuels their drive to keep winning—and to keep silencing the doubters.
