The Texas Longhorns are making a play for some serious athletic pedigree—but it's not on the football field. Instead, the Longhorns are setting their sights on the son of a legendary NFL linebacker, and they're hoping he'll bring his talents to the basketball court in Austin.

NaVorro Bowman Jr., a four-star point guard in the class of 2027, is the son of former NFL star NaVorro Bowman—a four-time first-team All-Pro linebacker who dominated the league for eight seasons after a standout college career at Penn State. Now, the younger Bowman is carving his own path, and the Longhorns are among several top programs vying for his commitment.

Texas joins a competitive list that includes UCLA, Stanford, Arizona, Illinois, and Penn State—the elder Bowman's alma mater—in the race for the talented floor general. And it's easy to see why the Longhorns are so interested.

"They talked to me a lot earlier in the year, and they've been keeping in touch," Bowman Jr. told On3. "They had a good year this year, made a little run in March Madness. I'm excited about picking things back up with them."

The young guard made it clear that immediate playing time will be a key factor in his decision. "I want to come straight in as a freshman and play," he said. "I'll look at their plan for getting me to my main goal."

With Bowman Jr. playing his high school basketball in California, the west coast schools could have a natural edge in this recruiting battle. But the Longhorns' recent NCAA Tournament success and their persistent efforts to stay in touch suggest they're far from being counted out. For fans of Texas basketball—and football, for that matter—this is one recruitment worth watching closely.
