The Vikings GM position has been unfilled for a few months, at least in the strictest understanding of the position.
Rob Brzezinski has been filling the position, shepherding the organization through March and April of 2026. He was restrained until he wasn’t, following a tepid free agency with a bold 1st-Round selection and a reasonably frisky Jonathan Greenard trade. The focus now moves toward hiring someone to fill the job on a permanent basis.
The franchise’s official communication channels passed along the update.
Consider what was said: “With the conclusion of the 2026 NFL Draft, our search for the next general manager of the Minnesota Vikings is underway. This will be a thorough and deliberate process led by ownership, with support from a small internal advisory committee of senior leaders. We have also engaged respected firm TurnkeyZRG to assist in conducting a wide-ranging search that includes experienced football executives, emerging candidates and individuals with diverse professional backgrounds. Our focus is to identify a decisive leader with a clear vision for team building, strong communication skills and the ability to build alignment across an organization. Out of respect for all involved, we do not intend to publicly announce candidates and will provide further comment when the search is complete.”
Not too long after the official news emerged, Tom Pelissero clarified that Rob Brzezinski is interested in tossing his name into the mix.
“Longtime Vikings executive Rob Brzezinski,” Pelissero clarifies, “who has run the team’s football operation since January, has expressed interest in the full-time GM job. Owners Mark and Zygi Wilf announced they’ve engaged with search firm TurnkeyZRG on the process, which is expected to take weeks.”
For a little while, I have insisted that Brzezinski is functioning as a steward, akin to an interim HC and not someone who will be the HC for the long term. Maybe that’s not quite right (note: I still maintain some skepticism).
Circle back around to the team’s official communication. For the most part, the Vikings are passing along fairly boring words. The fascinating detail is simply to affirm that things are beginning.
But then dig in a touch more. Look at a pair of words: “experienced” and “emerging.” Put differently, there’s going to be a consideration of football executives who have been at it for a long time as well as those who are a touch newer to the profession.
Many assumed that pivoting off Kwesi Adofo-Mensah — a relatively inexperienced option who had a background in academia and on Wall Street — would mean going to someone with a more standard football background, but that’s not necessarily the case. All options are being considered, at least per the official word.
The Vikings also made sure to buy themselves time. Venturing into a “thorough and deliberate search” means having the verbal cover necessary for things to proceed slowly. Maybe that’s not needed if there’s a slam-dunk candidate who gets hired quickly, but there’s wiggle room since there’s no clear timeline dropped down apart from a commitment to being “thorough.”
Pelissero estimates that the search will be measured in weeks, not days or months. Best guess on my end: the end of May for a hire.
Finally, note those concluding sentences, the ones that speak to vision, being decisive, and so on. To a certain extent, these thoughts mean essentially nothing since they’re so basic to the job (how can a GM not be a decisive leader?) and the words so overused that they’ve largely been drained of impact. The pessimist in the crowd does have a leg to stand on here.
However, these lines shouldn’t be totally discarded. Whoever gets grafted into that front office needs to be able to play nice with the in-house leadership.
Kevin O’Connell is a good coach who is opinionated; Brian Flores is a great coach who is opinionated. The front office has a lot of talent, made evident in the presence of Demitrius Washington, Ryan Grigson, and others. Commanding their respect and (at times) pulling rank isn’t for the faint of heart.
The Vikings intend to keep things pretty quiet until a GM is hired. Quite possibly, there’s a fairly mysterious search, but word has already leaked of Rob Brzezinski having interest. Does anything else get learned?
Minnesota is coming off a 9-8 season, has a top-five NFL talent in Justin Jefferson, and is set to allow a QB battle unfold in training camp. The broader NFL world is going to be paying attention to what’s going on in the Twin Cities.
The incoming GM is therefore going to be under the microscope.
