Former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey has offered a candid assessment of the Magpies' current situation, insisting the club won't be dragged into a relegation scrap but admitting their league standing is "not good" given recent seasons.
Eddie Howe's side currently sit eight points above the relegation zone with just four Premier League fixtures remaining—a margin that, statistically, should offer some comfort. However, the gap between expectation and reality has been a growing concern for fans and pundits alike.
"I don't think we'll be in a relegation battle," Howey told BBC Radio Newcastle. "But ultimately, where they are in the league is not good considering where they have been over the past couple of seasons. While I thought it was a decent squad, it's just clearly not strong enough for them to be competing on all fronts."
The former defender's comments reflect a broader frustration around St. James' Park. After back-to-back top-four finishes and a Champions League campaign, this season has felt like a step backward. Injuries, fixture congestion, and a lack of squad depth have exposed cracks in what was once a formidable unit.
Newcastle supporter Anas echoed a cautious optimism shared by many in the stands: "I think we'll be OK, but one more win will allow us just to breathe a bit more easily and put this season to bed."
With a favorable run of fixtures ahead, the Magpies have every chance to secure their Premier League status sooner rather than later. But as Howey suggests, the real work begins in the summer—rebuilding a squad that can compete on all fronts without running out of steam.
